FAQs

What should I bring to the initial appointment?

The most important thing to bring are your concerns. This is an opportunity to discuss your child and their strengths and challenges. The conversation will be candid. It is not necessary for your child to be present at this appointment.
This meeting may be conducted in person, in a virtual format, or by phone.
Prior to testing, SpEC will request information and records to complete a thorough evaluation.
SpEC will also provide you with a checklist of items to collect and bring to the testing session.

What will the evaluation be like for my child?

  • The part of the evaluation that takes place in person consists of age appropriate activities on appropriately chosen valid and reliable test instruments that may have activities that are academic in nature or may be play like.

  • The evaluation staff is highly skilled and experienced in administering the test instruments and assessment activities.

  • Professional evaluators work diligently to establish rapport with your child and provide a comfortable environment for testing. Although some of the academic items are difficult, most children enjoy the experience.

  • The evaluator will likely have questions for parents and teachers and others who know the child well. The evaluator may request certain surveys to be completed. Many of these items will be discussed in the initial appointment.

  • The evaluator will review the child’s school and academic records.

  • Evaluators also conduct observations, usually anonymously, of the child in the various school settings. This observation will be discussed with you and your consent obtained. We will work with the school to set up an appointment for observation.

  • The evaluators will attempt to obtain as complete a picture of your child as possible.

What happens when the evaluation is complete?

When the evaluation is complete and the report is ready, a post evaluation consultation
will take place to review the findings and answer any questions you may have.
ALL results are confidential and will not be shared with anyone but you. This can be
scheduled for in person or virtual. Whether the student participates in this meeting depends
upon their age and maturity. The decision to include the child should be discussed with the evaluator prior to the meeting.

SpEC is happy to discuss next steps for parents to take following your child’s evaluation.
We are here to partner with you as a resource and support as you make important decisions regarding your child.

Is insurance accepted?

SpEC does not accept payment via insurance.

Can I submit the report to my child’s school?

Yes. The report is yours to submit to school or physician or any other entity you determine should see the results. The report will meet all requirements for a Full Individual Evaluation (FIE) as determined by IDEA Federal legislation and state of Texas requirements.
